THR Journal Article Review - Understanding the Influence of Culture on End-of-Life, Palliative, and Hospice Care
This scholarly article review is designed to strengthen nurses’ clinical decision-making by offering a framework for understanding diverse cultural values, helping them navigate ethical dilemmas and align care with patient and family preferences. It increases awareness of culturally influenced non-verbal and spiritual distress cues, supporting more holistic assessments. Standardizing cultural assessment practices ensures consistent, individualized palliative care and reduces disparities through routine use of interpreters and cultural liaisons. The activity also builds nurses’ confidence in managing sensitive conversations, including family requests for non‑disclosure, providing communication tools that respect cultural roles, reduce moral distress, and improve patient‑family‑provider relationships.
