THPG Risk Management Conference 2024 - Swimming with the Sharks

Target Audience

This online educational enduring material is designed for Texas Health Physicians Group (THPG) physicians.  We also invite THPG physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses to take this course.  Its purpose is based on the need to address risk and legal issues that primary care providers see on a regular basis.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

Safe & Effective Controlled Substance Prescribing

  • Discuss the minimum requirements for safe prescribing of controlled substances
  • Describe requirements to safely monitor controlled substance use
  • Discuss TMB and THPG requirements
  • Review appropriate narcotic prescribing, including multi-modal approaches and alternative treatment options
  • Recognize some common characteristics of addition/use disorder

Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking Victims in Clinical Settings

  • Identify potential signs, red flags, and risk factors of human trafficking in potential victims that present in clinical settings
  • Discuss immediate healthcare needs of human trafficking victims
  • Summarize best practices in dealing with a potential human trafficking victim
  • Discuss utilizing a trauma-informed approach
  • Recognize how collaboration with interdisciplinary teams can improve the care of potential victims

Provider-Patient Relationship / Ethics Forum

  • Provide guidance from the Texas Medical Board regarding establishment and termination of the provider-patient relationship
  • Identify the process as provided by THPG policy for termination of a patient from the clinic
  • Discuss the options for proper termination of a patient in the various THPG settings in an ethical manner
  • Discuss examples of need for patient termination

Medical Board / Mock ISC / Death Certificates

  • Discuss the annual update on the board investigations for all THPG providers
  • Identify the most common issues that result in a board complaint
  • Explain the optimal approach to managing the investigation and response to the board
  • Review, identify and adjust professionalism, documentation and provider’s practice to reduce the legal and ethical risks of events leading to a board complaint, and the sequelae of any board action
  • Review the rules for completion of death certificates in Texas
