Learning Objectives
At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:
- Summarize the pathophysiology of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) and how this informs the choice of pharmacotherapy
- Describe the general management of AWS, including initial risk assessment and the benefits of different dosing severity scales and medication regimens
- Outline the benefits and rationale for different pharmacotherapies in the management of AWS, including phenobarbital, benzodiazepines, and mixed regimens
- Describe a framework for initiating treatment of alcohol use disorder in the inpatient setting
