THFW Ethics Grand Rounds - Combating Racial and Gender Bias in Medicine

Target Audience

This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for all physicians, nurses, pharmacists, providers, and healthcare professionals. Its purpose is to address the fact that according to the Texas Medical Board (TMB), physicians need at least 1 credit of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility a year. THFW Ethics Grand Rounds is designed to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice, in teaching, and in medical research; and to describe and explain underlying ethics principles, as well as the physician's role in society and with colleagues. Without this educational forum, patient care as it relates to ethical issues might be fragmented, uncoordinated, and unable to meet system and hospital standards for care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the problems of racial bias in medicine and how do we prevent it in our practices
  • Discuss the problems of gender bias in medicine and how do we prevent it in our practices
  • Work with members of the healthcare team to better recognize and decrease bias in patient care
  • Recognize the implicit biases that we all carry and how we can work through them
