THD Breast Cancer Grand Rounds - Palliative Care or Hospice: Which is Better for my Patients?
Target Audience
This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for physicians and nurses involved in the screening, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. We also invite clinical staff to take this course. Its purpose is to develop the skills and resources needed to stage the cancer, indicate prognosis, make appropriate genetics recommendations, meet national treatment guidelines and address the appropriateness of clinical trials for patients. Needs exist to provide strategies on approaching diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer with the newest standards and technologies.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate between Palliative Care and Hospice services and the benefits of both
- Review the different tiers of Hospice services and the qualifications for each that allow appropriate triage of the patient to the correct level of Hospice care
- Discuss treatments covered by Hospice care versus those not covered to allow for more realistic expectations for successful Hospice transitions.
- Describe ethical considerations of discussing a “good death” with the patient and family
- Discuss the need for a coordinated multidisciplinary team to help guide patient/family understanding and realistic decision making/expectations
