THD Internal Medicine Grand Rounds - Defibrillators and End of Life: The Patient, not the Device

Target Audience

This online educational enduring material is designed for physicians and clinical staff. Its purpose is to provide for the continuous educational need of the physicians to become more knowledgeable about the diseases in internal medicine subspecialties and become more efficient in the evaluation and management of concerns unique to their patients. 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the effect of defibrillators on quality of life of the patient, particularly at the end of life
  • Review and discuss current available data about patient defibrillator knowledge and their attitudes about deactivation; physician attitudes towards defibrillators and end of life; including the obstructions to physician-patient discussions about deactivation
  • Discuss the ethical aspects of defibrillator deactivation to clinical scenarios
  • Identify and utilize resources available to health care providers about defibrillators and end of life care
