Target Audience

This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for physicians, nurses and allied health professionals in the following specialties: emergency medicine, surgery (general and trauma), orthopedics, radiology, internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics.  Its purpose is to address the need address the skills and resources (competence) required to bridge the gap of complications and delivering care when dealing with uncharted territory in physician practice, along with which best evidence-based guidelines should influence the care that is provided to a patient.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss how the term “blood” encompasses blood as a liquid, its relationship with endothelium and how it should be appreciated as an organ
  • Examine the role of blood and the endothelium in maintaining physiologic homeostasis
  • Discuss that blood failure may occur in the face of sepsis or hypovolemic shock similar to heart or renal failure
  • Recognize the multidisciplinary healthcare team’s potential intervention and resuscitative methods which may address and reverse blood failure in the clinical setting
