THD Trauma Grand Rounds - Environmental and Physiological States That Alter Hemorrhage Tolerance

Target Audience

This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for physicians, nurses and allied health professionals in the following specialties: emergency medicine, surgery (general and trauma), orthopedics, radiology, internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics.  Its purpose is to address the need address the skills and resources (competence) required to bridge the gap of complications and delivering care when dealing with uncharted territory in physician practice, along with which best evidence-based guidelines should influence the care that is provided to a patient.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine an experimental model of hemorrhage in humans
  • Review the consequences of hot (including dehydration) and cold environment conditions on hemorrhage tolerance
  • Review the effects of commonly used pre-hospital analgesics (morphine, ketamine, and fentanyl) on hemorrhage tolerance
  • Discuss research findings which are valuable to the multidisciplinary healthcare team in gaining a greater understanding of the consequences of environmental and physiological states that may alter hemorrhage tolerance
