Target Audience
This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for physicians, nurses and pharmacists. Its purpose is to address the need for new standards of care for opioid use and alternative pain management to be incorporated into Texas Health’s culture. These standards will ensure Texas Health is an opioid responsible organization.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:
- Review the history and background of opiate use disorder
- Determine the distinct and shared roles, goals and behaviors of nurses, pharmacists and physicians practicing in an Opioid Responsible Organization
- Describe best practices prescribing and monitoring controlled substances including the use of the prescription monitoring program.
- Summarize the key topics and methods to communicate with patients and families regarding the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substance
