THFW Ethics Grand Rounds - The Use of Oral Alcohol in a Hospital Setting to Improve Outcomes
Target Audience
This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for all physicians, nurses, pharmacists, providers, and healthcare professionals. Its purpose is to address the fact that according to the Texas Medical Board (TMB), physicians need at least 1 credit of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility a year. THFW Ethics Grand Rounds is designed to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice, in teaching, and in medical research; and to describe and explain underlying ethics principles, as well as the physician's role in society and with colleagues. Without this educational forum, patient care as it relates to ethical issues might be fragmented, uncoordinated, and unable to meet system and hospital standards for care.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:
- Discuss use of oral ETOH for patients who do not want to stop consuming ETOH to prevent complications including delirium tremors or alcohol withdrawal
- Explain multidisciplinary team approach to initiate best ETOH withdrawal pathway for individual patient
- Describe the benefits of oral alcohol including decreased length of stay in alcohol withdrawal patient population and decreased use of Benzodiazepines in the elderly population
