THFW Ethics Grand Rounds - Substituted Decision Making
Target Audience
This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for all physicians, nurses, pharmacists, providers, and healthcare professionals. Its purpose is to address the fact that according to the Texas Medical Board (TMB), physicians need at least 1 credit of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility a year. THFW Ethics Grand Rounds is designed to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice, in teaching, and in medical research; and to describe and explain underlying ethics principles, as well as the physician's role in society and with colleagues. Without this educational forum, patient care as it relates to ethical issues might be fragmented, uncoordinated, and unable to meet system and hospital standards for care.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:
- Describe situations in which physician-substituted decision making is required
- Explain the moral hazard to the entire health care team related to the need for substituted decision making
- Identify resources and strategies for all health care team members to reduce moral and emotional burden
