THFW Ethics Grand Rounds - The Future is Now: How Advance Care Planning Initiatives Improve Patient Care and Reduce Costs
Target Audience
This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for all physicians, nurses, pharmacists, providers, and healthcare professionals. Its purpose is to address the fact that according to the Texas Medical Board (TMB), physicians need at least 1 credit of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility a year. THFW Ethics Grand Rounds is designed to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice, in teaching, and in medical research; and to describe and explain underlying ethics principles, as well as the physician's role in society and with colleagues. Without this educational forum, patient care as it relates to ethical issues might be fragmented, uncoordinated, and unable to meet system and hospital standards for care.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:
- Explain why effective advance care planning processes are important
- List three problems with advance care planning processes in hospital systems today
- List three important components of a robust advance care planning initiative
- Identify patients who are appropriate for serious illness conversations and completion of a MOST form
- Discuss the roles played by non-physician healthcare professionals in an advance care planning initiative and explain why each are important
- Summarize how interdisciplinary advance care planning initiatives can improve patient care and satisfaction while reducing costs
