Target Audience

This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for designed for psychiatrists and social workers.  We also invite psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, recreational therapists, mental health technicians, clergy and administrators to take this course.  Its purpose is to address the need for behavioral health and psychiatric issues/treatments.

  • Gain an understanding of the gut-brain axis and the signaling pathways that connect the microbiome to the brain
  • Describe why it is important to consider the microbiome and its role in mental health
  • Learn how microbe-host relationships and their impact on behavior observed in animal studies are mirrored in individuals with depression
  • Discuss the potential of microbiota-based therapies for optimal mental health and treatment of mental illness
