THFW Ethics Grand Rounds - Pandemic Related Ethical Conundrums

Target Audience

This online interprofessional educational enduring material is designed for all physicians, nurses, pharmacists, providers, and healthcare professionals. Its purpose is to address the fact that according to the Texas Medical Board (TMB), physicians need at least 1 credit of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility a year. THFW Ethics Grand Rounds is designed to facilitate the process of making ethical decisions in clinical practice, in teaching, and in medical research; and to describe and explain underlying ethics principles, as well as the physician's role in society and with colleagues. Without this educational forum, patient care as it relates to ethical issues might be fragmented, uncoordinated, and unable to meet system and hospital standards for care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Review the historical responsibilities of providers in pandemics and how this shaped the medical profession
  • Discuss the current ethical responsibilities of providers and the three duties of health care leaders in the COVID pandemic
  • Discuss ethical challenges to providing care in pandemics
  • Recognize moral distress and how working with individuals of other professions to maintain a climate of mutual respect and shared values can lead to resiliency, even during a pandemic
