Target Audience

This online enduring material is designed for physicians. We also invite physician assistants and APRNs to participate. Its purpose is to address the new Texas Health Resources disclosure policy and to improve the patient and family experience.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the rationale for transparency with patients and families
  • Review the elements of optimal disclosure communication
  • Define the 4 key principles of medical ethics and how they inform our obligations to communication with patients and families
  • Describe communication strategies for patient and family discussions with an emphasis on the ethical principles of autonomy and justice
  • Summarize the results of open disclosure programs at other healthcare organizations and the role of this approach at Texas Health Resources
