THFW 14th Annual Critical Care Conference - Lecture Series - A New Frontier in Critical Care: Saving the Injured Brain

Target Audience

This online interprofessional enduring material is designed for physicians and nurses in the following specialties: critical care medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, geriatrics, hospitalists, infectious disease, internal medicine, nephrology, palliative care, pulmonary and trauma.  We also invite physician assistants, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers and healthcare professionals to take this course.  Its purpose is to improve patient outcomes in the ICU and educate the healthcare team on new and recent evidence-based findings in critical care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Illustrate the robust evidence that delirium is a risk factor of excess mortality, length of stay, cost of care and dementia following critical illness
  • Discuss acquired dementia following ICU care as a global public health problem that dismantles our patients’ lives as part of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS)
  • Review new data-driven mechanisms embodied in the ABCDEF Bundle by which to improve patient-centered outcomes (survival, length of stay, successful discharge home) as employed within the ICU Liberation Collaborative in over 15,000 patients
  • Explain the strengths and pitfalls of ABCDEF implementation in order to change culture and care successfully so that ICU teams can better serve patients
