THP Multidisciplinary Grand Rounds - Beyond iPA: Expanding Stroke Management for the Internist

Overview

Target Audience

This online educational enduring material is designed for primary care physicians and specialists.  We also invite nurses to take this course. Its purpose is to address existing and emerging issues in the diagnosis and management of primary care diseases.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this online enduring material, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the latest advancements in acute ischemic stroke management, including thrombectomy for large vessel occlusions (LVOs), medium vessel occlusions (MeVOs), and large core infarcts in the late time window
  • Differentiate between symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid stenosis and apply evidence-based strategies for intervention and optimal medical management
  • Review the management of common cardiac etiologies of stroke including interventional cardiology treatments for atrial fibrillation and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure for stroke prevention
  • Implement best practices in systemic stroke prevention, including blood pressure targets, glycemic control, and lipid management based on pertinent clinical trials
  • Assess the evidence for antiplatelet therapy in secondary stroke prevention, including single antiplatelet therapy, dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), and emerging therapies currently under investigation
